every GDQ I think to myself "man i should try to speedrun Rise Of The Triad (1995), it moves so fucking fast" and then I try it and I'm like "this is undoable"
there ARE a couple people (like literally two) who run it now (there weren't last time I looked) but they're running the commercial episode and I wanna run the shareware, which I think might be much, much worse
the biggest problem is that the levels have designs like "4 machinegun dudes in a hallway, you can't walk past them and jumping is impossible" and the only solution is to just sit and plink away at them with your sad little pistols
most FPSes imo are not like this. there's either movement tech or they're just... less asinine? but this has no jumping, no pushing, no kiting enemies, there's just no way to change or ignore the huge stacks of enemies
everything's hitscan. at any given moment you are being struck by three bullets. the only weapons are pitifully weak infinite-ammo pistols and then like 11 different types of rocket launcher that have splash damage and a maximum of 8 shots before they're gone
I just realized: It's the FPS equivalent of a shmup. There's unreasonable numbers of enemies. Your peashooter can be upgraded but remains pretty worthless. You can pick up upgrade weapons but they only last a few seconds and are scarce.
