(1/11) So on 18 July 2018 I had a motorbike accident in Singapore. Miraculously I survived, spent 72 days in hospital, got married in hospital & have titanium in my body. I plan to run 5km on 1 year anniversary to raise funds for @Namaledu. Thread…
(2/11) I broke my ankle, my shin bone broke in two and came out of my leg. My hip broke in six places. I also broke & dislocated my left shoulder. I spent 72 nights in the hospital, the first 10 being in the ICU, as i fought for my life.
(3/11) I have extremely complicated multiple fractures. After multiple surgeries the amazing doctors saved my leg from amputation & managed to make do with my existing him. They put titanium implants in my body and literally nailed my hip and leg back in place.
(4/11) I was told that after 6 months I would be able to get off the wheelchair and start using crutches. In about 14 months (September 2019) I should be able to start walking without aid. Forget about ever running or playing sports.
(5/11) On one of th painful sleepless nights in hospital I couldn’t bear th thought of never ever playing sports, of not ever running again. I decided to ignore timelines given to me & make my own timelines. I have a second life & promised myself I would make the most of it
(6/11) Since then, I got married in the hospital. I gave a lecture at a university and spoke at a conference, in a wheel chair. All of these happened while I was still admitted in the hospital, unable to even stand on my own two feet
(7/11) I do excruciatingly painful physiotherapy 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. I was off the wheelchair and onto crutches after 3.5 months (14 weeks). Currently – 6 & a half months later (week 26) - I’m on a walking stick as I learn to walk again
(8/11) Towards the end of my stay in hospital they started to teach me how to walk again. Literally to put one foot in front of other. My muscles severely atrophied due to accident, surgeries & spending 72 days in a hospital. I lost 8kgs in the 10 days I was in ICU.
(9/11) I have amazing people around me who gave me love & strength to go through this dark phase in life. It's time for me to give back. Join me as I rebuild my body & mind. I don’t want my misfortune to go to waste & last 6 months of pain and darkness to be meaningless
(10/11) I will run 5km on 18th July 2019 - one year anniversary of my accident - to raise money for @Namaledu so that someone may benefit from my accident. Join me as I learn to walk again & train for my goal of running 5km on my anniversary, as optimistic as that may seem
(11/11) While conquering my personal mountains I plan to document journey at facebook.com/overcomewithwa…. I'll share some thoughts & stories from last 6 months. If there is anything you are trying to overcome, I hope some of this acts as triggers & signals to help you on ur journey
