He was the only Michigan Rep. who voted AGAINST providing federal aid to Flint.

The guy voted AGAINST federal help for people being poisoned by toxic water in his home state.

There are a couple of things gnawing at me about my Fri nt thread on the NYT’s FBI counterintelligence investigation.

In my breathless stream o’ consciousness, I closed with a few tweets about Obama signing an Executive Order that “supercharged” the FBI’s investigation.

The thread has gone a bit viral and has been blowing up my notifications.

Among the feedback, there was some strong criticism/outright rejection of the Obama EO parts by people who are expert in nat. security, the NSA, etc.

I take that criticism very seriously.

The main thrust of the criticisms were:

1) The revised guidelines Obama signed had been in discussion for years

2) The executive order was not hastily written

3) It was not written or signed because of Trump or to specifically empower an investigation into him.

The thing about counterintel investigations is that they sweep up conversations between minor players talking among themselves.

The folks on the edges talk to each other.

They send txts and emails and make phone calls thinking they’re outside the sphere of scrutiny.

An active counterintel investigation means the Trump Administration’s crimes were only as secure as the weakest link in their weakest moment.

We got hints of this early. Our intelligence folks picked up “signals intelligence” or SigInt from Russians talking to Russians.

2/
Those “signals” aren’t the kind of evidence that finds its way into a courtroom. In fact, it’s important that it doesn’t. It would burn sources and methods.

It lays out the crimes and the players though... and then prosecutors find ways to make triable cases other ways.

In the days after Comey’s firing, the FBI opened a COUNTERINTELLIGENCE investigation of Trump himself.

WOW!

Unlike the initial Trump-Russia investigation (which was looking primarily at events in 2016), the counterintel investigation was basically surveillance in 2017+.

Naturally, deciding to basically turn your national security and intelligence magnifying glasses on the President of the United States is a BIG DEAL.

The FBI didn’t enter into it lightly.
