Late last year, one of America's favorite Yellowstone wolf packs, the Lamar pack, had several pups. The pack had dwindled to 3 individuals, so the pups gave everyone hope of their survival. Then, a well known business owner in Cooke City shot one of the 3 adults - Spitfire.
Spitfire was a new mom. And wolf pups, just like human children have to be taught by their parents on how to live. In the wolf world, this means how to hunt elk and survive. These pups are suffering from a partial lack of leadership since their alpha female and mother, were shot.
The pups have in recent weeks been seen in and around the Silver Gate-Cooke City area just outside of the park. Since few people that live near the National Park actually understand they live near a National Park, a dog was killed by a wolf when it was outside unsupervised.
Two reasons this happened: 1) The pups are still looking for their mother (she was shot there) and 2) The pups lack critical training because their teacher was shot and killed. The town(s) have created this problem. And now, they want to kill the entire pack.
What instead needs to happen is a "protection zone" needs to be extended beyond the towns to protect the wolves. If people who live there don't like that, they can move - there are plenty of wolf supporters who would be happy to buy them out.
In the meantime, I ask EVERYONE who will be going to Yellowstone this year to 100% boycott Cooke City! Spitfire's killer owns a large business there and his son (also a wolf trophy hunter) owns additional businesses there, it's a small town and this needs to happen.
The most common reason for stopping in Cooke City is fuel. It just so happens Spitfire's killer sells fuel (hint); so instead of buying fuel there make sure your tank is full in Red Lodge if traveling south, and full at Tower-Roosevelt if traveling Northeast - bypass Cooke City.
