Le texte de la lettre d'Emmanuel Macron liberation.fr/france/2019/01… via @libe Has anyone pointed out that these protests are a solution to the problem they're expressing? Getting together once a week and becoming a cheerful mob is an end in itself.
The movement has revealed that many in France are acutely lonely and bored. Getting people off the streets (or at least, persuading them not to do so much damage when they're on them) will require taking the psychological aspect of this seriously.
I don't know what would provide a substitute, but imagine if this energy could be transformed into something constructive. I don't think the majority of the GJs truly *want* to learn more about the budget, have a serious political debate, or exercise a personal line-item veto--
from the loneliness of their homes. They want to get out every weekend with their friends, do something active outdoors, and find meaning in that. For many of them, these Saturday excursions are a play date.
