Yes, good article. And yes, they were the same policy.
I don't think, however, that the deaths of the men of that generation necessarily had to lead to this. They failed to institutionalize their experiences, to ensure they were passed on. They believed what they had seen was unforgettable; they were wrong.
We were casual about teaching that history; the most damning words in the piece are, "Most U.S. foreign policy elites have forgotten how to make the argument for a global order that has existed for longer than most of them have been alive;
many have forgotten that they needed to argue for it at all." That tells me they never really gave it much thought. And that should not have been possible.
You shouldn't be a "U.S. foreign policy elite" who can't quickly and cogently explain the point of US foreign policy.

He's also right that the next president will probably be a left-wing populist who will be even more eccentric.
Ultimately--unless I can persuade Americans to study history as if their lives depend on it--the US will have to learn the same lessons again, the hard way. Which is too bad.
We can learn enough about this history that we're not compelled to repeat it. But unless *most* Americans learn it, we're headed for a rough landing.
