My reading was Mt.27 this AM: the crucifixion & hours leading up to it. Awed afresh by the pure restraint of Jesus. No, not just restraint. The submission of Jesus toward the cross. That the Word made flesh, the Logos, held His tongue through such ridicule & abuse is astonishing.
Set the scene next to 2 Thess 2:8 when “the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth & bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.” Hold up: He will blow him to kingdom-come with a breath. Disintegrate him with his appearing.
And there those soldiers were in Mt 27, stripping him, mocking him with a scarlet robe & reed in his right hand like a scepter & spun thorns on his head for a crown. Spit on him. Slapped him. Took the reed & hit him with it. This he’d said earlier to Peter when he drew his sword:
“Do you think I cannot appeal to my Father & He will at once send me more than 12 legions of angels? But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” Can’t you imagine angels were begging to be sent?? But they’d not be called. The cross would not be stopped.
No big wrap up. Got no application to make. Nothing but awe. Perfect submission, Son to Father, both to a plan established before time. Before God said let there be light, there was-let there be a cross.

“Far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
