NEW: Skadden Arps, dubbed by Forbes "Wall Street's most powerful law firm," agrees to pay the Treasury more than $4.6 million for failing to register as a foreign agent for its role in Paul Manafort-linked Ukrainian influence campaign justifying jailing of ex-PM Yulia Tymoshenko.
DOJ's statement: Skadden's failure to register under FARA "hid from the public that its report was part of a Ukrainian foreign influence campaign."

The DOJ says that "several" of Skadden's partners and associates wrote the report, led by "Partner-1," who left the firm on April 13, 2018.

Ex-partner Gregory Craig, who reportedly oversaw the report on Tymoshenko, left the firm that month, per Bloomberg. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
When asked whether the Ukrainian engagement should be brought to the "resident FARA guru," Partner-1 responded: “I don't really care who you ask but we need an answer from someone who we can rely on with a straight face.”

Right, every reporter covering the courts knows this.

Some pundits pretend not to know this to spin evidence-free partisan conspiracy theories.
I should have written "disinformation."

"Conspiracy theory" implies a simple mistake of fact from folks who almost certainly know better.
Having sat through a lot of white-collar trials, there's almost always this moment during testimony from cooperating witnesses or defendants describe their pre-dawn raid to drum up sympathy with the jury.

Always at the same time of day: CNN didn't need a crystal ball here.

Former Obama White House Counsel's firm agrees to pay $4.6 million to DOJ & register as a foreign agent to settle charges it was illegally acting as an agent of Putin's allies in Ukraine & influencing the Obama Admin & Congress. #ButNothingsHappening
The lead partner not named in the announcement is #GregCraig former Clinton lawyer & Obama White House Counsel. It appears the firm has been able to throw him under the bus for his misconduct to escape prosecution.
The firm represented the govt of Ukraine in efforts to justify it's prosecution or persecution of anti-Putin politician Yulia Tymoshenko. Falsely identifying the amount they would bill Ukraine to corruption conceal the real parameters of the deal. $12k versus $4.6 million.

never did any actual, real live lobbying for Turkey or Russia.

He just merely....

1) Created a lobbying group, The Flynn Group
2) Accepted contracts from Turkey & Russia
3) Accepted payment for lobbying

You can do all 3 of those things & NOT break the law.
Not until you actually ACT on behalf of a foreign client by engaging in real live lobbying have you committed a crime if you did not register as a foreign agent under the FARA act.
Paul Manafort was charged for FARA violations.

So was his business partner, Rick Page.

You know who HASN'T been indicted for any FARA related shenanigans?

General Michael Flynn, that's who.
