Here's a 2015 photo of #CovingtonCatholic's fine, upstanding student body clad in blackface at one of their basketball games. The kid harassing the black player is also flashing the white power sign.
Covington Catholic has an all-male student body of around 500. Ninety-nine percent of the student body is white. The entire faculty (teachers and administration) is all white, not a single ethnicity represented other than Caucasian.
Wide-angle shot of the same game.
The students call themselves the Covington Catholic Crazies (nice alliterative bond with a group known for wearing eye-holed linen) and zealously say they don't wear blackface since they paint their entire bodies black. I get it, you're not 20% racist, you're 100% racist.
Here's #CovingtonCatholic's school website. Their school colors are blue/white. Notice the spirited lad in the middle flashing the white power sign--WITH BOTH FUCKING HANDS.
1/ I'm not going to wade into the whitewater of blackface vs a school blackout, minstrel shows, white power hand signals vs basketball three-point gestures in this thread. Instead, I'm going to tell the story of pro golfer Bubba Watson and the General Lee from Dukes of Hazzard.
2/ In 2012 Watson bought the General Lee at auction for $100k. He threw more money into getting a road ready and eventually he was driving the General Lee around, he even drove it to a few PGA events in the South. Watson was drawn to buying the General by a slice of Americana,
3/ his own nostalgia of youthful Friday nights spent watching Luke, Bo & Daisy get the better of Boss Hogg. Call it kitsch, novelty, or a vanity project--Bubba wanted that car. it also came with a large Confederate flag covering the roof. Watson, thinking the car was somewhat
4/ benign, kitschy--who doesn't like the General Lee, started to encounter some flak, some pushback on the car. Yet, he continued driving it. Then he had a conversation with an elderly black man who asked him pointedly why that flag on your car. Watson likely answered--it's the
5/ fucking General Lee. Theh the man went on to explain to Bubba what that flag means to him. to African Americans and the majority of Americans. It is a symbol of hate, a flag of a nation that seceded and declared war on this country for the right to own black people. Over
6/ 600,000 people died in the battle, this war. His words must have struck a deep chord in Watson that that flag was not some kitschy novelty to be displayed vainly on some nostalgic vehicle. Watson took the General Lee to a paint shop and they painted over the Confederate flag.
