Who's going to decide what constitutes "bullying" and "mobbing" as opposed to protected political speech?
Underlying all of this is the business model: We exchange our data for a free service. A prohibition on data-harvesting would be neutral about the specific opinions expressed, but would create a different set of incentives. It would no longer be free to mob and bully.
That would be a revolutionary regulation, but it would make a lot of sense.

I think you're right that the 2011 Arab uprisings--and Syria in particular--devastated the prestige of liberal democracies, led directly to chaos within liberal democracies, and that this is fundamentally, almost deliberately, ignored.
I don't share your view of Macron as Assad-like. (At all.) Difference in degree amounts here to a difference in kind. But I think you're very right to point out the absence of "soul-searching commensurate with the calamity."
The trauma is unidentified. No one speaks of it. The surface manifestation is cynicism and hopelessness. Underneath it is shame. The strenuous effort required to repress and deny the calamity might well be why so many of our politicians come across as dessicated puppets.

Serves a useful signalling purpose. It tells Russia and China, "Don't push it. We were restrained about the Northern Caucuses, Geogia, Ukraine, even Syria, but you don't want to know what we'd do if you push it too far on our hemiphere.
That alone might make them think, "Maybe it;s not worth it." But if it doesn't, we're in a fucking nightmake, because either we're exposed once and for all as the superpower who's mouth keeps writing checks that its military doesn't want to cash,

I agree with you completely that the question "What comes next?" is *the* key question, that our failure to ask that has repeatedly led to disaster, and that this administration seems even less likely to be asking itself that question than its predecessors.
But it isn't true that everything the US touches dies, that democratization is a fairy tale, or that the US has never intervened successfully in anything. US diplomacy also resulted in a massive wave of democratization in Latin America: freedomhouse.org/blog/latin-ame…
And the question "What happens next" is critical whether or not we recognize Guaidó. If we throw our weight behind Maduro, or ignore the situation, that too is a mess. Our policy is risky. Certainly I have no faith that Trump has thought it through.

The internet is huge, and ever since its creation people have been trying to hack it. It's not very secure, a lot of its infrastructure is old and we're all pretty careless on security: fertile ground for mischief, or worse...
Now the term 'hacker' is from the 1960s and originally meant someone who was very good at FORTRAN: they could literally 'hack' doing all the coding! Nowadays it's applied to anyone who subverts computer security, or wears sunglasses indoors.

Universities artificially limit the number of graduates, keep tuition prices high, and provide just enough financial aid to qualify as non-profits.

This enables the real business model - returns on massive endowments, compounding tax-free, and earning far more than tuition.

This is straight-up deception from a former Googler. Facebook and Google are both constantly mired in privacy scandals, and both companies have the same business model vis-a-vis data. The only difference is Facebook is in the headlines right now.
