I agree with you completely that the question "What comes next?" is *the* key question, that our failure to ask that has repeatedly led to disaster, and that this administration seems even less likely to be asking itself that question than its predecessors.
But it isn't true that everything the US touches dies, that democratization is a fairy tale, or that the US has never intervened successfully in anything. US diplomacy also resulted in a massive wave of democratization in Latin America: freedomhouse.org/blog/latin-ame…
And the question "What happens next" is critical whether or not we recognize Guaidó. If we throw our weight behind Maduro, or ignore the situation, that too is a mess. Our policy is risky. Certainly I have no faith that Trump has thought it through.
But *any* policy is risky, given the nature of the crisis. There's a big difference between recognizing Guaidó, who's the closest thing Venezuela has to a legitimate, elected leader, and calling in airstrikes.
