I've been super obsessed with falcoms early games once I realized they made dragon slayer 4 and I wondered how much DNA was shared between it and their older titles but it's like weirdly hard to just sit down and watch footage of these and think about it critically
ds1 was a top down rpg in the gold box mode and those are basically like hardtack to me, I'm told ancient peoples consumed it daily but that doesn't make it any easier to convince myself it's food
ds3 seems like a weird broken choked version of something they'd made previously and I can't look at it for very long to even see what it's really all about
ds2, however - I finally got myself to watch some footage of the msx version last night, and it actually looks like *fun*. it's big and tedious and you really need to know things going in but the overall gameplay seems crunchy and I can picture having fun with it
you can see where a lot of the DNA of ds4 came from. the monsters have the same kind of frenetic low-sample-rate hopping and dancing. the attacks in ds4 are basically all the "magic" from ds2. the overall art style is still very distinct, single color sprites and all
