Book #8 of 2019. Elizabeth Todd-Breland, A Political Education: Black Politics and Education Reform in Chicago since the 1960s. You should read this book.

This book is critical for those interested in the teachers' movements today, how black women have led teacher resistance, and how Democratic mainstream politics from Daley to Rahm and very much including Clinton and Obama have undermined good schools for black kids.
A lot of great journalists who write on these issues would find this book really useful.

This Day in Labor History: January 23, 1973. The Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers went on strike against Shell Oil with significant help from environmental organizations. Let's talk about a time when labor and greens worked together!
By the late 1960s, many unions responded to growing scientific literature about the health effects of industrial labor by demanding federal action and demanding action from employers to clean up their workplaces.
On the federal level, this led to the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Companies resisted doing anything about these workplaces.

Okay, so slavery is trending, thanks Kanye West. And hopefully, y'all know that if you aren't Black, this is your time to sit back, listen, and learn, because it isn't your time to speak.

Got that? Good.
However, as someone who has taught US History, I know how little most non-Black people really know about slavery in the Americas, and how foundational it is to Western dominant culture.

So I'm going to start tweeting some books so folks can educate themselves.
Because we also all know this isn't a topic to demand Black people educate about, and with a library card, you can learn enough to confront your local racist and spare Black people that much more work.

That's how this works, btw.
