CBS poll: Voters want *somebody* to cave on the shutdown, but slightly more Rs want Trump to cave (30%) than Ds want Pelosi to cave (23%). drive.google.com/file/d/0ByVu4f…
CBS poll: The partisan split on immigration is enormous.
Danger sign for Rs?
Trump massively upside down on the issue with independents and is losing 19% of Republicans too.
A problem for Trump: ~2/3rds of Republicans want him to keep the government shut down until he gets his wall. But ~2/3rds of voters want him to reopen the government without a wall.
A pickle.
As for getting to a veto override, I doubt these numbers are dire enough yet for a lot of Republicans to flip. You're risking a successfully primary challenge. Also helps explain why a lot of Republican senators want to be seen trying to find a solution but aren't attacking Trump
Also helps explain why McConnell didn't tee up votes on anything reopening the government until this week. Senators -- McConnell's flock -- as a rule don't like taking votes that are guaranteed to anger large numbers of their constituents.
On Thursday they'll get to vote first to back Trump's (almost certainly doomed) plan to reopen government with wall, DACA relief and asylum restrictions, then vote on reopening the government for ~2 weeks. A senator could plausibly vote for both, nodding to both constituencies.
