Automatic CRs are all the rage now. Used to be an idea that conservatives loved and liberals hated because it nukes spending over time via inflation.
(Warner's bill includes automatic inflation INCREASES, Portman's includes automatic CUTS.)
Another reason conservatives like Flake liked CRs back in the day: No earmarks.
Fun fact: If you liked sequestration austerity you should LOVE Portman’s shutdown prevention bill. It cuts spending every 90 days by 1%, forever.
Like sequestration on steroids.

So let me get this straight.

- On Dec. 19, Senate passes a short-term CR funding the gov. until Feb. 8
- Trump demands $5 billion for a wall.
- In his last act of cowardice, @SpeakerRyan doesn't bring the Senate bill up, and instead brings one up with wall money.
- We shut down.
@SpeakerRyan - Trump keeps the government shutdown for over 30 days
- Trump threatens a national emergency
- Trump proposes a sham deal
- And now Trump agrees to a CR, almost exactly the same as the one we wanted on December 20.

He made thousands of people suffer. For nothing. #TrumpShutdown
@SpeakerRyan Let's get another thing straight.

Trump caved. He listened to Democrats and agreed to open the government before negotiating.

This is a win, but the damage to fed workers and contractors, their families, and our country is done. This was shameful and should never happen again.

1/Here is a nugget for all these smart #wall folks:

Even if trump gets his $50 biwall money, he can only build at best 800 miles out of 1900+ miles.
BUT
We do not have roads and roads good enough to handle heavy loads of cement/steel/trumphotair to get it to almost 500 miles.
2/ he will push another $20-30 billion in infrastructure costs to border states for roads no one will use because let’s face it, it is a fuking desert.
However we will create a smooth network of roads for smugglers to enjoy a cushy ride inland.
