Last year in Venezuela, I met with now interim leader Juan Guaidó and many of his talented colleagues elected to the National Assembly during my visit. They are brave patriots who see a more hopeful and democratic future for the Venezuelan people.
I plan to speak with him in the days ahead and offer my support for his pledge to lead a thoughtful, peaceful transition to a legitimate election that meets international standards in the immediate future.

At the first meeting of the homeland security conferees yesterday, I urged my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to focus on smart and effective border security measures as opposed to threats of government shutdowns or emergency declarations from President Trump.
The President may be disappointed if we don’t give him everything he’s asked for, but if this Appropriations Committee did that, it would be a first in history.
We must use our bipartisan judgement to make the right decision for the American taxpayers and for the safety of this country. I'm confident that if we do that, we can come to a sensible agreement.

There is no reason why essential federal employees should continue to suffer while politicians in Washington bargain a compromise on border security. That is why I voted to reopen the government for two weeks while we continue to debate smart and effective border security.
Unfortunately, not enough of my Republican colleagues joined this bipartisan effort, so the government will remain closed for now and federal employees will risk missing yet another paycheck.
There are several Continuing Resolution options available to reopen the government. I hope my Republican colleagues will join our call to open the government as soon as possible.

Here are some of the anti-immigrant provisions included in the Trump-McConnell bill to end the #TrumpShutdown:
Excludes hundreds of thousands of DACA-eligible individuals and all TPS recipients from the African countries the President disparaged. Includes sweeping new restrictions that would bar many current DACA recipients.
Makes it much more difficult to receive TPS in the future, and guts protections for Central American children seeking safe haven in our country.

So before I begin this Venezuela thread I have to disclose I consider @KalebPrime a friend and it's difficult for me to see his country's situation deteriorate to this point.

We did a livestream together last year.
TL;DR is Dictator Nicolas Maduro held illegal presidential elections that were rigged from the get-go, and the aftermath of that made his inevitable victory be declared "illegal."

His replacement is Juan Guaido.
BUT ALSO Maduro still thinks he's in charge.

Thus, clusterfuck.
