My "#Education & #MentalHealth" grad course has made me realize that Princess Elsa was forced to suppress her powers to create ice and snow so she could be "normal." She was later labelled a monster, which is discrimination against people with "disabilities." ❄️👸 #ableism
The real villains are her parents. who should've encouraged her so she could embrace her powers and be confident of herself. #madstudies#disabilitystudies
Calling all #youth: Check out this opportunity to discuss w/ youth panelists on the #BLMmovement, esp. on what's happening at schools. They'll also cover issues that #Indigenous students & communities face in the education system.
1/5 As ppl try their best to stay home, political leaders need to stop scolding us for not #socialdistancing & start addressing real issues: underfunded healthcare, unfair wages & working conditions of essential-service workers, imprisonment of ppl (ex: migrant facilities, jail).
2/5 It is unjust for individuals to bear the brunt of #capitalism, which has caused these very issues by prioritizing money over ppl. Those who suffer the most are our most vulnerable: elderly who are more likely to die from #Covid_19 & students heading back to school this week.
3/5 #Onlinelearning will never live up to the in-person experience. Children & youth will lose out on relationships w/ peers & caring adults, learning supports & personal growth. Students will suffer from the consequences of #capitalism b/c we're not addressing the real issues.
Part 2 of @AsianAllies Student Series included honouring the story of 14 yo #EmmettTill & looking at systemic issues that affect Blk folks. Asian students at @MiddlefieldCI were invited to challenge the ways in which they were privileged & consider being an ally for Blk students.
Some @YRDSB students’ comments & questions: We only learn about Western/white histories in History class!? Asians & Blk characters are quickly killed off on TV shows & movies. What kind of Asian are we talking about? The systems have situated Blk folks to face such circumstances!
History has taught me to be a better friend & educator. I don’t believe in letting go of the past, as the past has shaped who we are & how we live. While we may believe we have all the choices in the world, we are restricted by systems & attitudes that we dont think about enough.
Q for y’all: Beyond listening ears, self-reflection & overcoming fragility, what is the role of white students & teachers at schools? #whiteness
Always refreshing to learn from @Ms_Karnad & @camillelogan. Empowering to watch women of colour leading the way in education, research & community building.
