It's #WorldAIDSDay and I thought I would share my story in a thread. I was born with #HIV HIV in 1998, full blown AIDS by six weeks of age due to poor care. (my mom was an alcoholic & addicted to crack & was barely able to get by herself). At six weeks of age I was in a coma.
@UNAIDS @EGPAF @ejaf @RED @CANFAR @amfAR @ETAForg I was on life support @sickkids until I was six months old. My doctor, Dr Stan Read and staff fought to save me. At six months of age they wanted to move me to a foster home for palliative care. They called more than 200 families and no one would take a baby dying of #AIDS.
@UNAIDS @EGPAF @ejaf @RED @CANFAR @amfAR @ETAForg @sickkids Finally, they found a home. A couple who already had six kids, five of them with special needs came to Sick Kids to pick me up. They were told I had a month to live and they decided they were going to give me all the love they could for whatever time I had left.

First 5 minutes, and this college clearly never had a #POSH training because a student has plopped into a professor's lap and the professor is telling the girls they'll clear the exams

Despite being a phenomenon unique to girls, this has always been surrounded by secrecy and myths in many societies.Taboos surrounding menstruation exclude women from many aspects of social and cultural life. Some of these have potentially harmful implications.
Menstruation is a phenomenon unique to girls. Men and boys typically know even less, but it is important for them to understand menstruation so they can support their wives, daughters, mothers, students, employees, and peers.
However, it has always been surrounded by taboos and myths that exclude women from many aspects of socio-cultural life. In India, the topic has been a taboo until date.

As if what we really need in this moment is more White men who wouldn’t be where they are today without racism pretending they get to referee the definition and confrontation of racism. 😒
Y’all can go ahead and stop imploring Republicans to denounce the racism they voted for, they’ve officially launched the inevitable “this isn’t actually racism” portion of their programming. Stop fishing for cover on their behalf, they don’t want your rehabilitation by proxy.
Seriously the issue at hand isn’t that the @GOP is unapologetically racist, it’s that their racism has been obfuscated and mainstreamed for 50+ years to the extent that folk are still asking if they condone racism with a straight face even after they nominated/elected KKK Trump.

So one of the important pieces of grad school for me is that I've learned to deal with the new reality of my life and who I am. So I wanted to share how I've learned to adapt to all of these challenges. #1 with any mental health challenge is seeking help. #noshame
Getting help for mental health issues in #gradschool can be hard. There are so many people needing help and often just not enough resources. Wait-lists can be long on campus. Going off campus can be really expensive on small already stretched budgets.
I got counseling when possible which was vital, but also sought out other options. @UFGatorWell was a great program that isn't a mental health service, but has academic wellness coaching which helped me make strategies, make a plan, and start working.

Cependant je me suis sentie grosse, on m'a fait me sentir grosse.
