Ken Griffin's $238 million apartment sale isn't just the priciest ever American home sale. It's a parable of our times. @kitastew and I get into it here. 1/ nytimes.com/2019/01/24/nyr…
First thing to know: 220 Central Park South is built on the site of a formerly rent stabilized building. Former residents were evicted, and the building was demolished. 2/
Second thing to know: Even in an age of mega fortunes, Ken Griffin is a trophy hunter who knows how to makes a splash. Also, he hasn't signed the Giving Pledge. 3/
Third point: At a moment when inequality is roiling the national political debate, some folks -- ahem @AnandWrites -- suggest such ostentatious signaling of personal wealth is, well, tone deaf. Methinks @SenWarren would agree. 4/
This all comes at a moment when the homelessness crisis in New York is worse than ever. There are roughly 79,000 people on the streets tonight. 5/
Lastly, kudos to @kitastew for tracking down some of the original residents of that building, who reminisce about a more "affordable time" for New Yorkers. END/
