With lots of talk about widespread tax avoidance by the wealthy—as an argument against ⬆️ their taxes, no less—it feels like a good time to note that while the rich get outright loopholes written for them in the tax code, low-income filers get some of the greatest scrutiny. (1/2)
Last year the IRS spent *over a third* of its audit budget on EITC recipients—who get audited at 2x the rate of people with incomes >$500,000—because of long-standing pressure from Congressional Republicans who only care about “improper payments” if they go to poor folks. (2/2)
