This is why I left the environmental field back tine mid 90s. We knew the problems heading our way, that the "elite" would fail to act, that they would look for other solutions which didn't damage their economic position and that Government was too weak ...
... a green revolution back in the mid 90s might have worked but today? Well, most people I know in the field haven't been talking about stopping the calamity for years but instead mechanisms for surviving. The only bright light in a dismal field of "leadership" is China.
Anyway despite gains in renewables, a horror show of bitcoin, 30 years of optimistic articles about how the world will come together and ... I'll end my wallow on this and get back to something that makes me happy. I'll leave the environment to those with more stomach for it.
Last things I'll add :-

1) I like Thunberg's desire for #Davos to act but the reality is we're all frogs in a pot of water that's slowly heating.

2) You've got to stop counting tons of C02 and start counting Toms [as in Cruise](IT Cork, 2008) - slideshare.net/swardley/stop-…

i.e.
3) When it comes to economists postulating that the market will create an answer to global warming, I've heard this for the last 30 years, almost as long as I've heard economists say China is in for a hard landing. There's a reason they call economics the dismal science.

X : What's the worst brexit outcome?
Me : The most incompetent is we agree to pay the "settlement" (i.e. goodwill) for extension of article 50 to June and when we leave then we discover the WTO preparations (which should have started in early 2017) didn't start until late 2018.
Of course if you're wandering into that territory then you may as well go ridiculous i.e. we pay "settlement" for extension and then revoke article 50 and have to pay for settlement and negotiate with EU 27 as we've signed away our unilateral right to revoke in the extension etc.
But both of those sorts of ideas assumes that the entire intellect of the Government is equivalent to a small carrot, the treasury is run by Del Boy & Rodney and the civil service has the guile and foresight of Mr Magoo. None of this I believe.

It feels that my form of maps are becoming a living thing on their own. No putting this genie back in the bottle. The ideas of mapping a competitive landscape and understanding context seem to have taken flight. It has a chance of outliving & outgrowing me. Achievement unlocked.
There is nothing better in life than watching something you have created start to outgrow yourself and knowing one day, it'll be teaching you lessons that you didn't even think of. The world of open source and creative commons are magical. I am truly grateful and happy.
The best bit is yet to come. The time when someone creates a better map and shows me all the places where I went wrong. At that point it's evolving and mapping will be truly alive.

Certainly comments made have not helped.
May being rebuffed is not surprising, that doesn't mean a compromise won't be found. I am slightly bemused why a Norway option (or variant of EEA docked to EFTA) hasn't become more prominent. Still, the focus should be and should have been for the last two years on WTO.

1. In 2016 I feared for our country. On this #HolocaustMemorialDay that fear now encompasses the western liberal democracy that has kept order and peace post WWII. National populism has spread across the hemisphere on a dark trajectory - one already outlined in history.
2. We are failing to see the bigger picture, blinded by the myopic lens of tribalism. Putin, however, is clear-eyed. This is his vision and has been all along. Populism isn’t a solution to a problem. It is a reaction to a problem -largely the problem of wealth inequality.
3. National populism revolves around the following: a) political distrust b) perceived destruction of national cultures c) anxiety about deprivation of jobs and income d) dealignment of political parties with voters. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

What is actually going on in our CJS. 11 year old child in cells at a London police station right now. Been there at least an hour before solicitor called. Now told I cannot speak to him until hand over done & officer still has enquiries....no child should be in a cell. Period.
Why do we keep allowing this to happen? Reps fall on deaf ears. Children in cells has become the "norm" in London. What can we do to start properly challenging this? His mother is there. It's not crime of the century either. No need for it.
How do we go about getting a change in the law on this. It should be no child should be put in a police cell unless [insert extreme exceptions] rather than for us to have to persuade the police why they should let a child out of cell. It is all backwards.

With the case of #MariaButina, let me share my own Russsian-run in with a woman who attended a talk I gave a few months ago. She waited for me outside and greeted me in Russian and began to engage me in an anti-US discussion. I reported the contact to NCIS.
I have asked over and over again for Congress to hold hearings and declassify the scope and depth of Russian intelligence activities in the US. This isn’t just people sitting behind keyboards in Moscow.
To say I’m frustrated on a personal level about the unwillingness to discuss this threat objectively would be an understatement. I have no idea why my warnings fall on deaf ears.

I'm convinced that the solution to repairing America is my Creative Centers idea. By investing in maker space facilities & tech shops nationwide, the next generation could meet, work, bond and learn by making and sharing creative efforts of all kinds. We'll all be much happier.
It's not rocket science or magical thinking. Consider your own experience. The happiest and most humanistically kind and generous people I know have creative hobbies and passions.

But most people can't afford the space or tools of creativity. It's a fine goal for government
But we don't talk about ideas because we don't talk about much of anything except the politics of societal decay since Ronald Reagan set fire to the Shining City on the hill. We're being punked by greedy billionaires, religious zealots, slimy grifters, and a complicit media.
