Went to South Carolina for Kamala Harris’s first 2020 campaign stop. She spoke at an annual do for Alpha Kappa Alpha - the country’s oldest African-American sorority (of which she’s a member).

End of her speech below. Full write-up here: telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/01/2…
Harris still not universally known. 2 of the 6 couples I talked to beforehand didn’t really know her.

But those that did were positive. “She doesn’t back down, she stands her ground,” said one attendee.

Another, re her Congress committee grillings: “She’s no nonsense.”
Harris joined in for one of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s songs. (She’s centre left in black dress)

“Hearts that are loyal
And hearts that are true
By merit and culture
We strive and we do”

She framed her campaign around embodying the sorority’s values.
South Carolina will be fourth to vote in 2020 Democrat primaries. Majority African-American voters (on past turnout).

State could be crucial. In 08 Obama won double Clinton’s votes, fuelling early momentum. In 16, Clinton hammered Bernie Sanders after tight first few states.
I asked Harris why she picked South Carolina as her first stop.

She said because of the AKA event, which “really means a lot” to people she knows + cares about.

And could she win the state come 2020 primary? “One day at a time, friend. It’s early.”
Last tweet - here’s Harris being bugged for selfies and autographs by attendees. (While the party was in full swing in background.)

Happened repeatedly in the first hour she was there.
