A short feed on how we could actually recruit and retain more teachers....
If we have to train as though we are a profession treat teaching like a profession
Pay teachers more
Instead of bonuses potentially at the start of a teaching career spread them to key milestones
Stop turning Heads into villains and stop school shaming
Support Heads and schools to take a tough stance on behaviour
Stop damming schools for excluding legally. Stop the endless stat trawls that imply behaviour is bad if exclusions are high
Adopt sensible approaches to emails
Adopt sensible approaches to marking and feedback
Reduce the number of data drops and the demand for needless data
Stop grading schools
Stop grading lessons
Increase PPA.....which requires some financial investment. The notion that a teacher should perform 5 hrs/day every day is not sustainable
Stop the pressure on schools and Heads, therefore reducing the pressure placed on staff
Rationalise what parents can complain about rather than it being open season
Prioritise subject knowledge as part of staff training
Give staff time to develop their own CPD
Flexi time could be an approach adopted by the profession
Stop the madness that schools are their to deal with all of societies ills. Clearly rationalise and define what a school’s role is.
Stop the “teachers get 13 weeks off a year” tosh. The reality is teachers do not.
Stop insisting that ITTs have to plan every lesson from scratch when thousands of lessons already exist. Yes it is an important skill to craft and master but.....
Engage in far more co-planning. Why do teachers have to operate as islands.
Address behaviour
Just a few thoughts
