This is the crucial irony to the whole thing. The 'alternative arrangements' were already there. The backstop only kicked in if they failed.
The Brexiter outrage over the backstop is just anger at being forced to commit to a promise they made, rather than being free to break it.
It's like they're acting out a morality play on why the promise was necessary in the first place. It was necessary because they're a bunch of mewling lying deranged bed-wetting nationalist bellends. And so it has transpired.
