This is the crucial irony to the whole thing. The 'alternative arrangements' were already there. The backstop only kicked in if they failed.
The Brexiter outrage over the backstop is just anger at being forced to commit to a promise they made, rather than being free to break it.
It's like they're acting out a morality play on why the promise was necessary in the first place. It was necessary because they're a bunch of mewling lying deranged bed-wetting nationalist bellends. And so it has transpired.

Had another go on a UK Juul. The law on nicotine content has absolutely killed these things. Makes them next-to-useless as an alternative to smoking.
It's so deeply absurd to see cigarettes on sale and then vapes being blocked from providing the kind of nicotine content which could help people stop smoking them.
My advice to anyone trying to quit smoking is to ignore UK Juul pods, and track down some from the US, or from other providers on Ebay, which have a nicotine content of 5%.

My current understanding of this: EU would almost certainly extend to July with little fuss. However, if a longer extension is required, UK will have to participate in European parliament elections.
There was once thought to be wriggle room on UK sitting them out, but less so now. Due to fears that parliament could be illegally constituted.
Personally I rather like idea of us participating. Would turn into a fascinating election. However it makes it harder to sell an extension in UK.

Fucking hell the coverage of the Malthouse clown car talks is depressing. Just on the basics, it does not involve extending transition. It shortens it by one year.
The withdrawal agreement allows for extension until Dec 2022. Malthouse limits it to 2021. That it not, whichever way you look at it, a one year extension.
(Everything else about it is also shit)

1/4 Listening to what the Prime Minister said today about the alternative arrangements she wants for the backstop is a re-run of last summer when the Cabinet discussed technology, trusted traders and the maximum facilitation proposal as a way of solving the NI border problem
2/4 The problem then was that these ideas didn’t go anywhere because the technology doesn’t exist, the EU described the plans as magical thinking and the Prime Minister ended up rejecting them.
3/4 It is therefore hard to avoid the conclusion that the Prime Minister had decided to go through the same process all over for reasons of party management rather than in the national interest.

If you think the GOP was short sighted when they pushed forward their #GOPTaxScam you are mistaken and here is why....
At first glance, it's nice to have lower taxes. I mean who doesn't want to pay less.

However, lower taxes means less revenue from income taxes.

This also means the Federal debt increases.
Increasing the federal debt means that the government has to borrow more money to cover the bills.

I'll bet that you can guess who is lending the government money.

Mostly wealthy individuals and corporations (which, by the way, just got a massive tax cut).
