My current understanding of this: EU would almost certainly extend to July with little fuss. However, if a longer extension is required, UK will have to participate in European parliament elections.
There was once thought to be wriggle room on UK sitting them out, but less so now. Due to fears that parliament could be illegally constituted.
Personally I rather like idea of us participating. Would turn into a fascinating election. However it makes it harder to sell an extension in UK.
