The fracturing of relationship between Paul & Barnabas is all the sadder when you come to it through a slow reading of Acts. Even the image of Barnabas “sailing off” is poignant. The truth is, good people can have a bad fight. But I was thinking how much worse others can make it.
A team breaks up & we can’t wait to know why. We crave the goods on people who may be trying to be godly & not malign one another. Never mind they’ve been though something rough. We’re bored. We love a fight. If they won’t jump in the ring and duke it out, we’ll throw them in it.
Imagine the ruckus if Paul & Barnabas lived now in a Christian world with an insatiable appetite for tabloids. We want Twitter wars. “Did you see how many followers Barnabas lost?? Like 10,000 overnight!” We want heroes & villains. We love cheering & booing. Give us blog exposés!
In a world where a lot of sick things are rightly being exposed, let’s guard ourselves from a sense of entitlement to know a bunch of stuff that is just not our business. Not everything that remains untold is secretive. Some things are just private. Know when to leave it alone.
