Got something on my mind but not sure I can communicate it well. Going to take a shot at it & if it gets all convoluted, I’ll take it down. I offer these thoughts in humility as one who is ever on a journey. Not looking for a fight so, if you are, please pass me by this morning.
I wonder how many of our camps within Christianity have been built on oversimplifications to (understandably) relieve us of as much mystery as possible. Mystery can be so painful after all. We want always and nevers so badly & thank God He supplies many. But we also impose many.
We don’t want to wrestle. We want to KNOW. And there’s so much we can know. God gave us the Scriptures & made volumes of divine revelation spectacularly clear. But we have created systems that make some things clearer than He did. Does this make sense? God comes with the clouds.
I’m not an academic. These conversations may seem out of my league but what I am is a lifelong learner & reader. I’ve read the NT countless times as have many of you. Some of our constructs would not likely be our natural conclusions based on a thorough, thoughtful reading alone.
Man has to teach us to come to some of these tidy systematic conclusions. But, man, are we right? To throw out an example, which extreme is right in regard to tongues? I thank God for many things that are utterly clear. The gorgeously simple gospel: CHRIST ALONE. Nothing added.
I guess what I want to say this morning is that we have a human inclination to find a bottom line & that’s hard to do with the infinite. We can’t know God without wrestling. We can’t study the whole counsel with sometimes going “Huh?” Remove all the tension & we move into error.
No camp’s always right. Hold loosely to man, tightly to Christ. Hold loosely to systems of man and tightly to Scripture. Let’s stay continually under good teaching & preaching. Let’s take our classes & pursue Bible knowledge. But let’s also just plainly thoroughly READ SCRIPTURE.
