Alex Langlands singing the praises of lime, limewash: environmentally friendly, recyclable, permeable, durable, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-pestilent: a hugely important ingredient in vernacular architecture of every culture who developed its use.

Native Americans built some of the most impressive defensive walls in the history of mankind. Even their ruins are magnificent. Here is one example from the city of Cusco in Peru. Some of the base stones are over 3.5 meters tall.
Of course, the fortress walls would have been the strongest, but the city had its own defensive wall, and in addition to this the city blocks were divided by tall, massive stone walls, leaving the streets like tiny canyons. Here is Callejón Loreto (Loreto Street).
When they didn't have stone they used adobe bricks or rammed earth, like in Chan-Chan, founded in 850 A.D. and once the largest city in Pre-Columbian South America, 40-60 000 people. It had an inner wall system 32km long, 50-60 ft high, 15-18 ft wide. The outer walls, 100s of km.

Josef Pieper wrote this in 1945 being plucked from the chaos of war and delivered into a German military prison cell. Here he learned about Goethe's "not only Castle of the soul but also the town", the walls Goethe built around his mind to stay true to himself. The Goethe Option?
Reading this I can make sense of Goethe's incredible calm. He was present during some very violent fighting and must have seen chaos up close, first hand. But still, the walls of his soul preserved him.

My work life has always included coffee makers percolating out of control. For people in blue collar jobs who didn't try to get enough sleep, coffee was ever present.
When I worked on a printing press, I had a boss who had to make his first pot double strong using caffeinated water. No joke. Otherwise, he couldn't function, as in at a level where safety was an issue.

If you want it know why billionaires donate, look at Microsoft.

In the 90's Microsoft had 1 lobbyist and spent <100k/year.

Because of this, Justice filed a frivilous antitrust suit to break the company up. 5 years of court.

Microsoft then created a large lobbying outfit.
If you're rich, the government will plunder you unless you pay-to-play.

That's the way the system is set up.

In fact, that's exactly the way people like @matthewstoller, who's "anti-monopoly", have specifically designed the system.
