How I Lost At The Game Of Business (And Why I Started A Personal Brand):
I spent months on the idea. Refined every detail. Studied the market, inside out. Spent thousands. Got the product made. Multiple revisions. Back and forth with suppliers.
And finally...
So I did.
The results?
Initial success, or at least by my definition.
Sale. Sale. Sale.
Things were looking up.
THIS is going to be HUGE, I thought to myself.
I was wrong.
Days passed, then weeks.
Sales kept growing.
Woke up one day with an inbox full of emails.
Odd.
Opened the first.
“WTF!” I thought.
Opened the second.
“You gotta be fucking kidding me.”
Then the third, fourth, fifth, sixth… and on and on and on and on.
Because it was bullshit.
A competitor in the market w/ a pretty large personal brand (who I didn’t know before this) had seen my product offerings, felt threatened (I suppose) and sent his army of “followers” to sabotage my bizness.
Fake reviews.
Fake reviews.
False accusations.
False accusations.
False accusations.
One after the next.
Ads reported.
Ads shut down.
Over and over again.
Negative comments on every page.
From people who had never bought a damn thing on my website.
Fuck, I thought to myself.
“This is SO unfair! It’s ALL lies” my GF said…
Yeah…
But there wasn’t a DAMN thing I could do about it (besides the obvious actions)
All I could do was sit back and laugh.
And laugh, I did.
As much as it sucks to say…
Business is war.
Even when you’re in the right, you can be drawn up to look wrong.
At the end of the day, it’s all about leverage.
And if you have leverage, you win.
And sent his army to destroy me.
Which they kind of did, but not really (because no "external" event could ever stop me).
But the lesson was clear…
Get leverage, Tej.
A MASSIVE AUDIENCE WHO FUCKS WITH YOU.
Aka
A personal brand.
So the next day I woke up and launched my “personal brand” via Tweeter.
And now you know why I'm sitting here and writing this tweet to you.
