Exclusive: During the 2016 campaign, @realDonaldTrump asked to borrow millions of dollars from @DeutscheBank. The loan request was never disclosed. Deutsche Bank, fearing for its reputation, said no. with @JesseDrucker @benprotess nytimes.com/2019/02/02/bus…
This appears to have been the first time Deutsche Bank said no to Trump, its prized client. For nearly 20 years, Deutsche had been his lender of last resort, despite repeated defaults, dispensing billions of dollars in loans.
The loan request came in early 2016, as Trump was lending tens of millions to his presidential campaign. He asked Deutsche to expand by $10+ million an existing loan facility, backed by the Doral resort, and to use the proceeds to finance work at his Turnberry resort in Scotland.
The loan request came through Deutsche's private bank. Trump's longtime banker Rosemary Vrablic and her bosses pushed hard for it to get done. But senior executives in NY and Frankfurt balked. After an internal fight, Christian Sewing, who is now Deutsche's CEO, killed it.
The same month that Deutsche rejected the loan, @realDonaldTrump was citing his warm relationship with the bank to deflect criticism of his business record. This is what he told @susannecraig in a March 2016 interview:
Have I mentioned I’m writing a book on @DeutscheBank, @realDonaldTrump and much more? Coming from @customhousebks @HarperCollins in early 2020. Stay tuned for info on how to preorder.
