One of my aphorisms/mottos has long been “Logic is overrated as a system of thought”. When we overrate logic and “rationality”, we often call irrational perfectly logical decisions based on premises and goals that we aren’t aware of and/or don’t share.

What might you do differently if you believed, sincerely, that the world was to end tomorrow?

What might you do if your job was stressful and your main objective was to avoid conflict?

How might you behave differently if you were quitting tomorrow, or if you just wanted to serve your time until you could collect your pension?

How might you behave differently if you were being held responsible for made-up numbers that you couldn’t possibly meet?

In those situations, truly rational behavior would very likely differ from what we think people “should” do.

I think of my contribution as providing perspective, information, and techniques, which may be useful to people.

I try not to think what they “should” do.
