Is adding to withdrawal agreement reopening it? @MargSchinas declines to specify or rule out. Is May's mission for legally binding change still satisfied by the Ceta option (as it was was in Dec)? Next 3 weeks will tell us. Door open for felines to fade in political declaration
It is significant that Barnier is leading EU team in talks that look like negotiations to me. Previous contacts over assurances in Nov, Dec and Jan in loved Robbins, Selmayr (for EC) and Serafin for Tusk

I've spoken to officials on both sides of Brexit talks who dismiss the Malthouse amendment as “no plan at all” and “bonkers”
It basically ditches the backstop and wants an extra year of standstill transition for only half the current financial settlement, telling the EU 'see you in court for the rest'
It's managed no deal, pay to play, at cut rates, then WTO - more @thetimes midday edition

Germany backs Article 50 extension - so does France so it is a done deal if May asks
Peter Altmaier, German economy minister (an important post given coalition) comments very important - he is genuinely very close to Merkel on EU policy and significantly to Selmayr in EC)
Clarification process is seen by the EU as moment when government’s red lines could well shift - permanent customs union, poss. with British involvement in European trade policy, could be key. Focus turns away from legal assurances on backstop to substance of future relationship

Speaking in Brussels @simoncoveney says the Withdrawal Agreement is not up for renegotiation, and he dismissed the call by the Polish foreign minister for a five year limit on the backstop as not reflecting the EU position.
Coveney said: “We have spent 18 months or so in a difficult negotiation that resulted in a Withdrawal Agreement and all of the detail that was part of that. It’s been made very clear repeatedly that the Withdrawal Agreement is not up for renegotiation.”
He said Polish FM Jacek Czaputowicz had made a similar suggestion in Dublin in December, when he was en route from London, but back then Mr Coveney said a backstop with a time limit was not a backstop.

@henrymance Let’s start off: the trade secretary blames foreign countries’ willingness to believe in a no deal. “A number of countries ... are unwilling to put the preparation in for no deal.”
@henrymance This is correct. It is unsurprising - and indeed it misses what needs to be justified. It is not the fact that hardly any trade deals will be “rolled over” by Brexit day that requires justification, but the exaggerated promises before.

Ok, I’ll try and keep this brief, but lets talk PT Cruiser and the 2007 recession. FYI, I’m not *blaming* the crash on the PT Cruiser, just generally laying out how the story of the PT Cruiser and the people who bought them provides an early window into the lending meltdown...
(if you were in the car biz in the 00’s and want to chime in/check my work, feel free...just maybe turn your location off just in case any of your former customers are out there still pissed about what you did to them)
So rewind to the late 90s: economy was strong for a good chunk of consumers (definitely not everyone), and while lending wasn’t the free-for-all it was to become, it wasn’t terribly hard to get financing (again, a good chunk of people, but definitely not all)...
