The touching story of Abdurraheem Abdulkadir Maijamaa

Thread:
Back when I was an undergraduate in Bauchi, I knew Abdulkadir Maijamaa, who was my mother's customer. Abdulkadir owned a shop at Central Market in Bauchi metropolis, where he sold shoes. He was always a smiling and friendly youngman, and obviously religious and upright.
In December, my mum called to tell me a tragic story about Abdulkadir's son—Abdurraheem. She was in the market for shopping as usual, and how she saw Abdulkadir that day left her in no doubt that all was not well with him.
Abdulkadir always spotted her from afar in the walkway leading to his shop. But on that day, he was so absent-minded until she entered his shop; a shop always filled to brim with all kinds of women and children shoes, alas, the shelves were scantily filled with very few shoes.
Although the emptiness of Abdulkadir's shop concerned my mom, what concerned her most was how Abdulkadir lost weight and was looking completely different.
"Abdulkadir, why are you looking like this? ...are you sick?" she impatiently enquired. Abdulkadir said he just received a call from his wife, where the loud sob of his son, Abdurraheem, barely allowed him to comprehend the message; Abdurraheem's catheter had removed.
Little Abdurraheem is unable to urinate through his penis—a bypass had to be done under his navel, where the catheter was inserted. Now let me take you through the sad story of little Abdurraheem.
Little Abdurraheem was taken to Bauchi State Specialist Hospital by his father for circumcision in December 2017, when he was six years old. The circumcision was done by a doctor whose identity is still kept hidden to little Abdurraheem's father by the hospital authorities.
All was well after the circumcision until little Abdurraheem began to urinate through various openings on the shaft of his penis along the line of the circumcision—a clear indication something had gone wrong.
Abdulkadir brought his son back to the hospital few days after the circumcision. But this time around he was directed to see Dr. Ismail Muhammad, an expatriate doctor from Egypt.
After brief diagnosis, Dr. Ismail said he was going to perform a corrective surgery on little Abdurraheem.
A day was set and Abdurraheem was brought for his surgery. Dr. Ismail performed the corrective surgery on little Abdurraheem two weeks after the circumcision. That corrective surgery was the beginning of Abdulkadir's family's real problems.
After that fateful surgery, Abdurraheem could not urinate other than the few drops that kept dripping from his penis due to the near complete blockage of his urethra.
Abdurraheem cried all day (and night) from the pains of his excessively pressurized bladder. His traumatized parents brought Abdurraheem back to the same hospital again.
This time around, they were referred to Dr. Khalil (second name unknown), another expatriate doctor from Egypt, who was a consultant urologist.
After examining little Abdurraheem, Dr. Khalil declined to treat him, citing unethical practice by the two doctors who did the circumcision and the corrective surgery—who were both not urologists,
and in Dr. Khalid's opinion, should not have done any surgical operation on Abdurraheem in the first place.
Now confusion was added to the trauma of Abdulkadir's family; they did not know what to do or where to go.
At this point, they got referred to Dr. Fahmi, another expatriate doctor from Egypt in the same Bauchi Specialist Hospital. Dr. Fahmi prescribed some drugs on little Abdurraheem and told them to come for a follow-up check after few days.
The situation didn't get any better, and Abdurraheem kept crying all along. That is not the end of Abdulkadir's family's problems; Abdurraheem's case file had gotten missing,
and until the file was found, which had the history of little Abdurraheem's case, every doctor didn't want to touch little Abdurraheem.
When things became unbearable for Abdulkadir and his family, he was advised by sympathizers to report the matter to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital.
After reporting the matter, the CMD apologized to Abdulkadir's family and advised them to seek immediate medical attention at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH).
But Bauchi State Specialist Hospital was not done piling problems upon Abdulkadir's family. The next problem was no referral could be given because the case file was still missing.
It took the serious intervention of the CMD before a referral was given by Dr. Ismail Muhammad, the doctor that performed the disastrous corrective surgery.
After eventually getting the referral, little Abdurraheem, whose condition had become critical, was rushed to ATBUTH for medical attention. Upon diagnosis, he was scheduled for an emergency surgery for a bypass to remove the excessive urine from his system.
After the emergency surgery, Abdurraheem was scheduled for another corrective surgery at ATBUTH. However due to Abdurraheem's prolonged inability to urinate, he developed some complications in his blood, which would not allow him to undergo any surgery until it was corrected.
Problems just kept coming from all angles to Abdulkadir's family. Abdurraheem was placed on a medication that was to correct the complications in his blood. Several months have passed, Abdurraheem's blood is still not okay.
Abdurraheem has now spent over a year with catheter, bypassed from an opening under his navel. His father had to train himself on how to change the catheter and dress the opening, which oftenly got infected and discharged pus.
While all this was happening, Abdulkadir kept paying the medical bills from his business, and with a distracted mind and usually absent self, it was only a matter of months before his healthy business began to decline.
Now, broken Abdulkadir is in a difficult limbo; Abdurraheem, who had to drop out of school, is in urgent need of medical help; his business is closed; his family emotionally, psychologically and financially exhausted.
They need help!
