Ocasio-Cortez is succeeding because she’s putting forth ideas that are both ambitious and popular and is trusting that people will support them instead of trying to mask her intentions. Progressives expend so much energy and good faith apologizing for and masking who they are. 1/
The truth is, most Americans understand the economy is rigged and they also buy into climate change. They’re living it. They’re seeing the effects, and they see how Republican/corporate policies have bled this country dry. 2/
Democrats have been terrified of rhetorical attacks for too long and have allowed Republicans to frame them to determine the terms of the debate. They hide, and they obfuscate their intentions and beliefs out of fear. 3/
But it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. They never propose their ideas, never champion them with frankness and honesty, and so those ideas poll poorly or the debate is dominated by unflattering portrayals. 4/
There is so much room and support for progressive economic reform, restructuring, and a reworking of our system to both improve and flourish. But it won’t happen if people aren’t bold and honest. 5/
Progressives have to put their ideas out there. There’s an audience for them. The American people who aren’t entrapped in the Extreme Right Wing Alternate Universe will listen. They see that something is terribly wrong. They don’t need convinced. 6/
By pushing this legislation you frame the debate. All government is malleable. For too long conservatives have said things are impossible and it’s been accepted. That has to be challenged and overcome, and that’s what she’s doing. 7/7
