SCOTUS usually responds pretty quickly to emergency stay requests. It's now been six days since all the filings came in, and last week's administrative stay expires tonight. This is down to the wire. Two thoughts on what might be taking them so long. 1/4
Possibility #1: Roberts has been striving to forge a consensus on either granting or denying the stay that will avoid irate dissents & put on full public display how riven the justices are over the state of abortion rights. 2/4
Possibility #2: Either the liberals or the conservatives in the minority are writing a scathing dissent AND someone in the majority is writing a statement concurring in the denial/grant that responds to the dissent. They may may have had several back-and-forths. 3/4
OR, perhaps most likely, BOTH of those possibilities. We should know within minutes or hours not just whether the Louisiana law will go into effect but about the likely fate of abortion rights in SCOTUS's new era. 4/4
