Secretary Whitley’s testimony today only deepened our concerns regarding the flawed and inaccurate voter purge list that his office sent to counties two weeks ago. #txlege texastribune.org/2019/02/07/wat…
Instead of taking full responsibility for this debacle, he passed the buck to the previous Secretary and the Department of Public Safety. #txlege
He did not provide a full accounting as to why his office issued a press statement after their inquiry and why they referred it to the Attorney General’s office when he testified that the list was flawed. #txlege
Most alarming for voters, the Secretary admitted that he sent this list of individuals to county officials and the Attorney General before knowing all of the facts to determine voter eligibility. #txlege
As a result of this reckless action, tens of thousands of Texans might be unjustly purged from the rolls and become targets for investigation and prosecution. Our stance remains the same: the Secretary must rescind his tainted advisory. #txlege

Harris County District Attorney @kimoggforda came into office promising to turn the criminal justice system around. But she has requested a $20 million dollar increase for her office to hire 102 prosecutors. This is a step in the wrong direction texascivilrightsproject.org/harrisco-ogg/
More prosecutors would result in more prosecutions and more people in our already crowded jails and prisons. More alarming is the fact that District Attorney Ogg makes this request without accounting for the current allocation of resources in her office. texascivilrightsproject.org/harrisco-ogg/
We need to look for ways to trim the District Attorney’s budget, not increase it. We should spend our limited resources on expanding educational, housing, occupational and public health services that include mental health counseling. texascivilrightsproject.org/harrisco-ogg/

Today, we are heading to the US Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit arguments in our Stringer v. Whitley case. This is our "motor voter" case against Texas for failing to comply with the federal National Voter Registration Act. We sued in 2016. nbcnews.com/news/us-news/t…
Because of Texas' failure to comply with the law, at least 1.5 million people are not receiving an opportunity to register to vote as required by federal law. Under the NVRA, eligible voters have a right to register to vote every time they update or renew their driver’s license.
Our clients attempted to update their driver’s licenses and voter registration records through the Department of Public Safety website but the state disregarded their registration request. When they tried to vote, they were not allowed to cast a regular ballot.

BREAKING: 1/ Along with our partners at the @ACLUTx and 11 others, we have sent another demand letter to the @TXsecofstate demanding he take immediate action to fix his voter purge debacle. We are demanding that he: 1) rescind the original Advisory at the heart of this mess.
2/ Instruct all counties that have sent notices to individuals on the basis of the voter purge list to immediately retract such notices and cease sending out any further notices.
3/ And that, moving forward, any guidance provided to counties, whether supplemental to the initial Advisory or otherwise, be communicated in writing and available to the public for their review.

Enough of the secrecy. Texans deserve better

At the Texas Capitol today, Texas Secretary of State David Whitley has his nominations committee hearing. He’s sure to be asked some tough questions about his office’s troubled effort to remove alleged noncitizens from the state’s voter rolls. #TXlege
Whitley is talking about his voter purge effort — which he’s referring to as list maintenance. He says his office has been training local election officials since the start. However, local officials have told me they’ve felt lost on how to verify the state’s list.
Democratic State Sen. Kirk Watson asks about the accuracy of the voter list, Whitley says it’s not wrong, “it’s collaborative.”

First, major donors to Empower Texans & related PACs make up about 17% of Paxton's fundraising this filing. Kyle Stallings, Windi Grimes, Dick Saulsbury, the Sparkses, Wallace Hall, and Kathaleen Wall all gave. But there were 2 massive Empower-world donors there, too... #txlege
