I once was walking through a lush field when I saw a female mallard rise from the bushes about ten feet in front of me and drag herself across the ground, flapping one wing as if she were injured, trying to lead me away from something hidden.

I looked at the place she wanted me to avoid, and found her hidden nest, full of beautiful brown-speckled eggs. I held my hand over them, being careful not to touch, and felt her heat radiating from them.

I savored the beauty, then walked away.
