None of this shows “empathy,” “courage” or a “moral compass.” What it shows is two things:

1. Desperation
2. The best time to resign was right after the photo came out, the second best time is now
I’m very aware that there were a small number of African Americans who came to the US as indentured servants prior to the institution of chattel slavery. The rhetorical point Northam needed to make does not begin there. He doesn’t know how to dig upwards.
The narrow factual truth that a tiny percentage of black laborers were brought to this country before the slave trade adds nothing to the discourse he hopes to raise and certainly is no defense against blackface or making light of the KKK.
