Spent a week responding to every email with Smart Replies, a beige abyss of false laughter and manic amiability. I rendered my self unto Google, but from its beeping heart I stab at thee - with this gently humorous write-up of the experience! theguardian.com/technology/201…
It was important to me that F Scott Fitzgerald be heard on the topic of Gmail's smart replies and what they could mean for all of us in our responses to cat videos and 30 Rock memes.
Glad people are still enjoying this piece, there were some super devious and fascinating aspects I never mentioned.

FOR EXAMPLE

When emailing Irish people, I often got 'Grand' as an option instead of 'OK', which Google somehow knew to NEVER suggest for a non-Irish recipient.

Petition to make it law that any time an FA Cup game is televised from one of those lower league stadiums you can clearly see gaffs through, the broadcaster MUST zoom in on someone watching from an upstairs window.

I’ve seen this @HeerJeet thread about John McCain’s funeral retweeted a lot this morning. It deserves attention, though I think the analysis here has limitations.
2. I think the main one is a failure to reckon with what McCain was — not an establishment figure or the leader of a political movement, but rather an American Cold War politician grappling with the meaning of politics after the Cold War ended.
3. McCain was a believer in the American-led international order. But the original cause motivating the establishment of that order — defense against Soviet Communism in all its malignancy — ended in 1991. Americans’ traditional skepticism about the value & importance...

Trump (i.e. Pence) has been initiating policies that hinder access to and info re: basic contraception for the past year. It turns out he is against run-of-the mill contraception, too. (Who knew?) I wanted to see what he has been up to...TAKE 10 MIN AND READ THIS #WomensHealth
He has initiated policies that promote the rhythm method (75 percent effective) over other forms of contraception. He is trying to get rid of comprehensive sex ed in school in favor of abstinence only (which has been shown to increase the teen pregnancy and STD rate in teens.)
He is changing Title X clinics to abstinence until marriage and rhythm method as funding priorities. Trying to defund Planned Parenthood enen though fedl funds to PP cannot be used for abortion but are used for breast/cervical/std testing, contraception, and preventative health.
