Was ist da dran?

1. "Leaving natural peatlands with high conservation value untouched"

👉Es würden also keine naturnahen Moore abgebaut. Zumind. in der EU stehen die restlichen naturnahen Hochmoore unter Naturschutz.
Das ist also ein Bullshit-Argument, denn da abbauen dürften sie eh nicht..

1/Friday we made it! We saw briefly/incompletely how #pollen #beetles preserved in #peat can shed light on long term #ecological change. There are other 'proxies' + the #peatland #archaeological record, esp rich in 🇮🇪, a remarkable 'archive' of past people/environments/climate A black and white drawing o...
2/#Peat is remarkable for so many reasons, long regarded as of little 'use', now known to be an #ecosystem 'superstar' (TBD further tomorrow!) key for preservation of #Palaeoenvironmental + #Archaeological record. 3/In this sense, we can think of #Peatlands as representing an intersection between how we understand long term #ecological change, #ClimateChange, human activity/impact + data key for #Conservation #Rehabilitation #Restoration of #Ecosystems Image 1: From Book Image 2! ImageImage

1/ An evening thread! Yesterday #Pollen next its beetles #Palaeoentomology - preserved in #peat fragments of bugs (wing cases, head capsules etc) are difficult to ID but provide key evidence of #Palaeoenvironments - #Prehistoric #woodland, #Biodiversity changes+extinctions! Two people, stood in a pit with an exposed face of peat in f
2/Dr Eileen Reilly (photo 1, r) passed away too young. Her #Palaeoentomological work was groundbreaking. Demonstrated presence of beetles in #prehistory now extinct/rare in 🇮🇪 many associated with wood/trees (Saproxylic), 'Urwald relict' group (see table!) 1. Good morning 👋
Tuesdays 🧵Given that most of #Mayo has #Peat soil, it should come as no surprise that the water flowing through the Burrishoole catchment is full of #Carbon, giving the rivers and lakes their typical brown, dark colour

2. There’s nothing particularly special about Lough Feeagh. It’s a fairly typical, deep, #Humic lake (45m deep), similar to many lakes that you find in all the mountainous regions along the west coast. It’s a pretty nice place to work
3. The impacts of #ClimateChange & #LandUse that we measure in Feeagh, therefore, are likely to be replicated in lakes in any of Ireland’s blanket bog catchments (to varying degrees). We'll look at #LandUse change 1st, and how it impacts rivers and downstream aquatic ecosystems

1/Thinking of #trees #peat #carbon and #nature and #fires. When are Victorians (without hysterics @theage ) to be made fully aware of the State #auslaws over fines in State Parks for picking up a rock, walking off track and so on. @DanielAndrewsMP/2
2/As it is now there are hundreds of shooting licensed people walking off track. Hundreds of thousands of feral deer, xrabbits,x pigs (latter two a food, anti #poverty source that cannot be culled by shooters) already damaging #native wildlife.Protecting #Indigenous locations/3
3/ @DanielAndrewsMP is key but to lock up (by fines) large areas is #segregation and discrimination. To lock up but then ok if you pay — is a cynical misuse of power. It would be good to hear from #Indigenous Victoria as we already know the value of the birthing trees was/4

Extraordinary scenes in Seanad on deeply flawed Horticultural #Peat Bill. On top of exemption from #planning , the bill stayed enforcement action & disregarded unlawful extraction & more putting us clearly in breach of EU law - key parts of their #PeatBill NOT highlighted🤔& 👇
- #Peatbill didn't even bother to provide properly for allocation of all the assessments required by EU law. Talk about giving #falsehope to those impacted by the successive failures! U simply can't stick ur head in the bog when it comes to EU law - at least u shouldn't but 😱👇
What @reginadoherty described as "a foolish legal action" tinyurl.com/2p8k59xr added insult to injury to our National Courts who rightly upheld the challenge . The #PeatBill added further insult and disregard to the EU Court of Justice's rulings.

THREAD: A few more thoughts about this v welcome announcement from @DefraGovUK

I know many of you are thinking "Why the need for a consultation?" and I COMPLETELY understand the frustration, of course!

But, it is probably necessary to ensure a ban is legally watertight
It is now ESSENTIAL that @DefraGovUK launches that consultation AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so that we get peat sales banned before the UK hosts the UN climate talks #COP26 in #Glasgow in November

No later than that, please @DefraGovUK

Sooner if at all possible
The peat companies and retailers will no doubt complain that they "need more time" to adjust their business model.

Well, they've had 30 YEARS, and if they are not ready yet they only have themselves to blame:

THREAD. Once upon a time .... see those long pale strips w/ dark outlines leading from the fore- into the middle-ground of the photo? Hold onto your hats: #RomanoBritish #peat diggings close to then coast line & now in the Cambs #fens, dug before the mid-3rdC AD.
2. A major flood from the sea in the mid-3rdC filled these #RomanoBritish peat diggings w/ the light-coloured silt you can see in the photo. Now the peat wetlands they were part of have disappeared except for their dark outlines. They’re top L of the central blue block on the map
The map is from eaareports.org.uk/publication/re…, one of the iconic Fenland Survey volumes all available for free download.
