I was thinking about my grandma Sophie. We never focus on post-menopausal females who gave their genius & courage to their families rather than jobs. Let’s start a thread where we share stories about older women who did amazing things for their kin & never got celebrated outside.
My grandma kept the family together in hard times and stood by my grandfather when his radical politics made it hard to find steady work. She used her investment skills to keep the family solvent and to make sure that her husband always looked like the strong capable man he was.
Who is or was that lynchpin in your life? We all have them. Why are they so invisible? If you enjoy this feed, Sophie Rubin (who would have been 104 this year) is lurking behind what made me who I am as a thinker. I just wanted you to know that. Now I want to hear about yours. 🙏
Also, to be clear, I’m looking for family lynchpin stories and not just grandmothers: aunts, cousins, stepmoms, long term care givers who were part of the family. Any older females who gave to family and ended up with less outward visibility as a result.

Glenn is upset. He’s a skilled and very smart partisan in my opinion. But I do see him as being on a team & envy him in that regard. That’s why I named the #IDW.
2/ I don’t give hot takes on many items for a reason. Many years ago Bob Dylan made the mistake of recording, in my opinion, the rocker “Julius & Ethel” about the 1953 executions of the Rosenbergs. I think it immoral to have a position on the Rosenbergs:

3/ As I see it the execution of Julius as a filthy spy was justified. The execution of Ethel Rosenberg was an abomination. It was a “message killing” dropped like Luca Brasi’s vest on the doorsteps of progressive Jewish homes: “Go too far left and we *will* orphan your children.”

If the US constitution were simply a piece of code, it would NOT compile. There is an entire culture of sophisticated make-believe, ritual & fiction essential to making it appear free of error, so that it can govern those who WISH to abide by its spirit.

We are acting as idiots.
Our speech is not absolutely free. We do not have one man one vote. Our right to keep and bear arms is not unlimited. We routinely prohibit free exercise to those who claim religious belief. Etc.

If we don’t want to *pretend* to keep its genius going, we have a *huge* problem.
Yes we have a written Constitution, but it’s not sacred. It was written by an actual patriarchy & there‘s no Public Service Announcement that teaches children that it’s a “fiction of the willing.” I don’t usually say this because I don’t want to break its spell...yet some now do.

I'd like to pay a debt or two. I have not always had the easiest relationship with @jgreenhall over the last 10 years and I don't always feel comfortable with his takes on things. But he is one of my "minds of last resort." Early on @wikileaks & @Bitcoin. Maddening on everything.
My emphasis on "Sense-making" came from him directly as did the phrase. I don't know that I can or would recommend him to most sane people. Just know that he's out there and that when everyone has gone crazy, he is one of 5 or so people I call to make sure I'm not losing my mind.
If you want to know why I hesitate, it's because he's often independently very close to something I believe, but taking it in a direction with which I deeply disagree (usually too strategic or w not enough 'soul' for lack of a term). But we're not so egoic: he's super insightful.

Joshua was very much a rainbow baby 🌈 and we were so excited and over the moon when I finally made it into the second trimester. (Alex and I are both big rugby fans!)
I was working as a 1st year Registrar in A&E when I suddenly broke my waters at 24 weeks. I was transferred to Southampton @UHSFT who have a specialist level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. They were wonderful, and did everything they could to stop my labour over Father’s Day.
