I'd like to pay a debt or two. I have not always had the easiest relationship with @jgreenhall over the last 10 years and I don't always feel comfortable with his takes on things. But he is one of my "minds of last resort." Early on @wikileaks & @Bitcoin. Maddening on everything.
My emphasis on "Sense-making" came from him directly as did the phrase. I don't know that I can or would recommend him to most sane people. Just know that he's out there and that when everyone has gone crazy, he is one of 5 or so people I call to make sure I'm not losing my mind.
If you want to know why I hesitate, it's because he's often independently very close to something I believe, but taking it in a direction with which I deeply disagree (usually too strategic or w not enough 'soul' for lack of a term). But we're not so egoic: he's super insightful.
Thought those of you who put up with me should know; I've been thinking about this for a long time and it's time to boost @jgreenhall's signal: high variance, high insight, and high agency. Just know, he's not your indoor cat.

This is the elephant in the lab.

A secret reason (which we collected anonymously multiple times at NBER/ASCB) for delaying tenure decisions beyond healthy fertility is departmental fear of committing to top women in research for fear they will find motherhood more fulfilling.
You can blame the Principal Investigators who told us this (both male & female). You can blame the universities. You can blame the messenger. But we need to talk about getting STEM moms a LOT more money for help in the house & make more allowances for staying home for 5-10 years.
And yes, Dads can be more present. But before you go too far down that road, consider that some of the STEM women we spoke to said that they would have WANTED to be at home, particularly with little children (<7) and what they really wanted was a way back to research afterwards.

The Switch Pitch is a mechanical implementation of the Self-Duality of the Tetrahedron: it replaces every corner by a face & every face by a corner. This principle is known to all mathematicians, yet none of these thought to implement the idea for sale:

Now here’s my challenge. Chuck Hoberman, so far as I know, mysteriously stopped at the Tetrahedron and left the two coolest dualities unimplemented!

Cube <—-> Octahedron
Dodecahedron <—-> Icosahedron

Question: can you extend the Switch Pitch idea to the remaining dualities?

Glenn is upset. He’s a skilled and very smart partisan in my opinion. But I do see him as being on a team & envy him in that regard. That’s why I named the #IDW.
2/ I don’t give hot takes on many items for a reason. Many years ago Bob Dylan made the mistake of recording, in my opinion, the rocker “Julius & Ethel” about the 1953 executions of the Rosenbergs. I think it immoral to have a position on the Rosenbergs:

3/ As I see it the execution of Julius as a filthy spy was justified. The execution of Ethel Rosenberg was an abomination. It was a “message killing” dropped like Luca Brasi’s vest on the doorsteps of progressive Jewish homes: “Go too far left and we *will* orphan your children.”

How to read academic writing: Repeat.

First skim for the thesis statements and the major steps of the argument.

Then read the supporting paragraphs under the theses, but if they seem unclear, try reading the paragraphs backward.
Mostly the information and ideas that lead to the conclusion or sub-conclusion come after the conclusion is stated, often in nearly reverse order. So start at the end of the paragraph and try to get what each sentence says, in reverse.
Then once you have the gist of what they were trying to say and the logic of how they got there, you can decide if you want to read the thing.

You haven't really read it yet; you just figured it out.

But that's okay. Actually reading something is often not necessary.
