For the next time the narrative of ag land use for animal ag comes up. As usual, the narrative is, at best, misleading. ALL of agricultural land is <40% of the land surface. But only a small portion is ideally suited for cultivation & production of food crops. 1/6
This is termed arable land. More than 3/4s of that very limited resource is already producing food & fiber for human use (food) vs animals (feed). 2/6
Just looking at grain (& soy) crops, almost 2/3s is already used as human food. 3/6
The quantities of each crop used for food (livestock) vs food (humans) differ, so looking at percentages can mislead. Also, the proportion of each crop used for food vs feed differs between these crops. 4/6
Ruminants occupy an essential position in humanity’s food systems. They utilize: All the land resources available (including rotations on arable land producing food crops); A range of resources & plant byproducts that are NOT food; While producing essential nutrients. 5/6
*If* (worldwide, most don't) ruminants consume human-edible food crops (which sometimes are spoiled, etc, & not suitable for human consumption), they INCREASE the quality of the nutrients they consume. Overall, they increase the overall quantity & quality of the food supply 6/6
