When we made the magazine, we tried to figure out what made a "theLAnd story." Rucci was a platonic ideal - a brilliant artist from a rapidly changing neighborhood who withstood the deportation of his father, the incarceration of his uncle & the near-fatal shooting of his brother
It's also about the death of his former rap partner, Sean Mackk. Inglewood & Inglewood rap. But it's not intended to be a sob story or melodrama. It's ultimately about the indomitable spirit of Rucci and the neighborhood he represents. So in conclusion, listen to more Rucci.

The imagination deficit of the corporate stooges who own local media is staggering.

YOU CANNOT SAVE A PAPER BY GUTTING ITS STAFF

That only hastens the death spiral. Papers can only be saved by becoming more vital to the communities they serve. By actually mattering again.
The thing about print is that 97 percent of people aren't on Twitter. They miss almost everything on the Facebook or IG timeline.

Most readers are regular people who aren't subsumed by online discourse. People love print media. You just have to give them something to care about
It's just that the calculus is different today. People are not going to buy print mags or papers the way they used to. But they will pick them up at a coffee shop or movie theater or venue and devour them. We can't keep ours in stock.

I guess Suge taking the plea deal and serving out the rest of his natural born life for running over a man at Tam's over a beef regarding the NWA biopic is really the only way it could've ended.
We'll remember Suge as the most terrifying boogeyman in LA rap history, but there was obviously another side. He had a brilliant ear for talent, immense savvy and built one of the best independent labels of all-time from scratch. Plus, my dad swears that he's a really nice guy.
My dad apparently used to see Suge all the time smoking cigars in the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, which as you might have guessed, was not a place where you could smoke. Classic Suge.

I guess they used to talk quite a bit and he always told me Suge was an absolute gentleman

A few thoughts on the closing of the Village Voice (which have already been echoed elsewhere):

Obviously, the internet destroyed classified ads & ended print media’s ability to effectively print money, but any autopsy has to squarely blame the ravenous ghouls at New Times Media.
Even a decade ago, it felt like a lifetime achievement to get a byline at the Voice. Sure, it was past its prime but it still employed brilliant writers & editors, & still represented a glamorous bohemian ideal to a naive writer staring across the continent.
The decline & degradation of the Voice was a slow-motion car crash. The New Times owners did what they did at every paper in their chain. Slashed rates, placed insane click bait demands on employees and tarnished the brand to where no new owner could save it.

Cepheid variables are neat stars that vary in brightness periodically. Even neater, their brightness and period is directly related.
This is really handy because you can figure out how bright they are from the period of the variation.
so if you measure how long it takes to vary in brightness, you know how bright they are, so you can then compare that with how bright you see it in the sky... and therefore figure out how far away it is!
cause the problem with measuring brightness to determine distance normally is that you don't know if it's a bright star far away or a dim star that's closer to you.

But with a cepheid variable, you can figure out how bright it is, solving that problem.

Jungkook stared at the enclosed envelope sitting on his desk, his lips pursed tightly and his arms crossed over his chest as he let his chair carry the weight of his body. His dress shoes clicked on the floor as he tapped his foot, the sharp tap echoing through the office.
The frustration builds up each time he listens to the clock hand ticking away the seconds.

It has been a day. The realization hits him hard and suddenly Jungkook stopped tapping his feet on the ground.

It has been a whole entire day since Secretary Kim quit.

1) I'm not sure how to make people remember or care that 15 years ago the United States invaded Iraq, setting off a war that continues to this day, with several hundred thousand Iraqis dead, millions turned into refugees. I covered the invasion for the New York Times Magazine.
2) Though I'm a writer, I shot photos during the invasion as I drove a rented Hyundai SUV from Kuwait into Iraq via Safwan, then up the spine of the country to Nasiriya, Diwaniya, Hilla, Kut and finally Baghdad. Here's the Hyundai on March 19, 2003. It's clean--that will change
3) The photographer I worked with, Laurent vander Stockt, drove his own SUV. After several failed attempts to get into Iraq, one time turned back at gunpoint by U.S. soldiers, we finally got through, via what we guessed was a minefield (I followed Lauren tracks). Here's Laurent.
