What emission metric is best?
* Global Warming Potential (GWP)
* Global Temperature Potential (GTP)
* Ocean Heat Content (OHC)

There are many choices, & @AarneClimate reminded me about one of my papers...

(mini thread)

The GWP, the "gold" standard, gets a lot of critiques because it does not represent temperature. Though, it does represent the cumulative energy added to the system, & may serve well for things like sea level rise and so on...

Don't forget it was only intended as an example!

The GTP is a measure of temperature, and therefor links very well to the Paris Agreement. Though, the OHC may be more robust as most of the energy sits in the ocean. @RogerAPielkeSr has advocated this for a long time.

The integrate GTP (iGTP), the point of the original article iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108…, is a measure of the energy lost out of the system, & since the energy in the system eventually decays (except CO₂), it is very similar to the GWP. In fact, we defend the GWP...

The GWP & iGTP (stocks) are very similar, & the GTP and OHC (flows) are also similar (as absolute metrics). This is all easy to show analytically with a simple 2-layer energy balance model. All in the said paper... (I was much smarter 5+ years ago)
