Remember that form I needed to mail to the GA Secretary of State (as pre-addressed) or else my voter registration would go inactive? Here’s what happened: I went to the SOS in person and was informed I was in the wrong place — needed to go to Fulton Board of Elections. 1/
I asked what would have happened to the form (with my ssn and/or driver’s license no.) if I had mailed it. The SOS rep said “we would just mail it to Fulton.” 2/
So I went to the Fulton Board of Elections today in person with my card. While there:

- the associate who took my card said she didn’t know how to input my information if there was no change of address (my info on the card was the same as registered) 3/
- I was told by multiple associates that I could go without voting for nearly 8 years without being purged from the rolls (but the law only requires two general elections of inactivity)

And this is when I tried to go in person to ensure I didn’t screw it up. 4/
The mail-in form has adhesives that didn’t work for me when I tried to moisten them, and I wouldn’t mail a card that had my personal identifying information exposed on the outside.

We do not have a user-friendly voting system. Staying registered shouldn’t require this. 5/
The right to vote is a fundamental right. There is no other right that we treat as “use or lose” this way, even putting aside the confusing administrative hoops facing people who want to stay registered. GA must do better. 6/6
One thing I love about this job: when I encounter a problem I wish someone would do something about, I can sign a bill solving it. Here’s a caucus bill that will end voter purges. One piece of a larger set of necessary reforms.
