“i was gobsmacked to find out how many prisons we have,” says panel moderator cynthia neff.
noticeably not on the panel is current albemarle county commonwealth’s attorney robert tracci. instead, we have the man currently challenging him for that position this year, jim hingeley.
“there’s very little justice in the criminal justice system” for the black community, says diane mcneal from the NAACP. she instead calls it “the criminal punishment system.”

So, @MaxBoot, strap in and I am going to try to give a primer on how historians ask and answer questions about the relationship between the past and present. You want to know about 1) drop off in enrollment, 2) lack of historical knowledge, and 3) who is responsible for 1 and 2.
Now, next point to hit is: what the premises of the different questions? Point 1: yes, there is a drop off in enrollment. So: valid premise to research and draw conclusions on. Point 2: not really clear if this is the case.
Having, for various reasons, done a lot of reading about the origins of history departments in the US, there are always generational complaints like this. But, to go along, I'll tentatively grant that the premise for Point 2 is correct.

Mueller Sentencing Memorandum against Papadop is astonishingly sour and surly. It demonstrates gross incompetence by both FBI and Mueller for which they attempt to blame Papadop, rather than admitting. In doing so, they lied to court about timing, just as they accused Papadop.
2/ Mueller said that lies "caused damage" to investigation because they were "early" in investigation when "key decisions" were being made. In fact, Papadop interview was nearly six months after investigation started. Mueller lied about timing, just as he accused Papadop of doing
3/ Mueller made a very testy response, purporting to deny claims by @simonamangiante that Papadop had "voluntarily reported" Mifsud's identity to FBI. FBI response contains new details on interview. I will parse remarkable possibility that FBI had NO prior knowledge of Mifsud.

It's really not difficult to understand this.

The birthrate is plunging in the U.S. because it's too expensive to raise a child. And it's too expensive to raise a child because of a combination of right-wing social policy and economic shifts our government hasn't prepared for.
First, the U.S. has no mandate for paid parental leave, no universal pre-K, no universal health care, no long-term cash welfare, and not only no universal higher education, but we've slashed subsidies that keep tuition rates low.

Now the GOP is trying to slash food aid too!
Oh and let's not forget housing. Ever since 1960s era reforms that codified housing policy can't be whites-only, we've slashed housing assistance. It's now unaffordable to buy or rent a place big enough for children in most every city where there are jobs in significant numbers.

A few thoughts about the AmLaw 100 financial reports, which came out today: law.com/americanlawyer…
First things first: I'm delighted for the law firms that had a banner 2017. Really. Revenue and profit growth in a buyer's market are reliable metrics of good work and value delivered. These firms deserve credit for running good businesses and serving their clients well.
Keep in mind also that the AmLaw 100 is not most law firms, and neither is the soon-to-be-covered AmLaw 200. These are very large organizations serving even larger companies in major urban centers in a growing economy. The physics are different here than in other markets.

Well since Jo Johnson has decided to ruin Boxing Day, let’s have a little think about this article in the Times.
There's ultimately two substantive points here: Johnson believes that universities need to be forced to protect 'freedom of speech', and a group of Oxford academics has recently been involved in an attack on it.
It's worth noting that academic freedom of speech is already protected by the Higher Education Act of 1988, something I learnt when my institution used it to protect my academic freedom of speech from a homophobic attack.
