THE DISINGENUOUS WORLD OF "SELF-IMPROVEMENT"

Man is told a thousand and one things "to do"

He is given a thousand and one things "to be"

He spends his life in anticipation of the things he must "do"

And in guilt for not having done them.
He must be kind and compassionate

He must forgive at the drop of a dime

He must give to the needy

He must love his enemies

He must say the right things to his children

He mustn't have desire or greed

Have you done all of these?
He must write down his goals

He must make affirmations

He must make positive self-talk

He must learn from others

He must not fear failure

He must keep a healthy diet of specified carbs and fats

Have you done all of these?
He must begin his day in a positive way

He must have a specific morning routine

He must meditate for twenty minutes a day

He must balance his chakras

He must go to the gym

He must do yoga and asanas

He must write down the next day's tasks

Have you done all of these?
He must love himself

He must cut out the negativity

He must show gratitude

He must find a mentor

He must face his fears

He must push through the hard times

He must accept change

He must change his attitude

He must welcome all challenges

Have you done all of these?
He must change his habits

He must learn a new language

He must create a journal

He must create a life mission

He must leave his comfort zone

He must learn the art of small talk

He must get out more and socialize

He must practice gratitude

Have you done all of these?
He must be comfortable with difficulty

He must manage the pangs of regret, guilt, and fear

He must attend stress-management workshops

He must not reinvent the wheel

He must try minimalism

He must "be a finisher"

He must be an optimist

Have you done all of these?
He must attend silent retreats

He must work with a meditation instructor

He must try chanting

He must not get angry

He must take a few deep breaths to calm his anxiety

He must meditate on loving-kindness for the welfare of all sentient beings

Have you done all of these?
These were a few examples taken directly from the most popular self-improvement and spirituality sites on the internet

Sites that receive millions upon millions of visitors.
How many prescriptions will you follow?

How many platitudes will you chase?

How many austerities will you perform?

How many methods will you try?

And how many years will you try them for?

What is the date at which you will decide if it has worked?

Do you have such a date?
If you decide to stop pursuing such prescriptions, will you then decide to "just be?"

And after you begin "just be-ing," how long will you do this "just be-ing," before you evaluate if IT has worked?

Do you have such a date?
And after you decide to stop "just be-ing," will you then decide to "drop your ego?"

If you do, how many years do you imagine it will take to "drop your ego?"

5 years?

7 years?

20 years?

And what "method" will you use to drop this ego?
Nothing "works"

Except . . .

The Truth.

Namaste.
