Something I think about a lot is how #veganism interacts with privilege. Veganism for wealthy, white Americans is very different from veganism for other demographics. When communicating your activism, this is such an important aspect to consider regarding your audience.
When you’re poor, yes rice and beans are cheap but that gets exhausting after a while. For many in rural areas, finding options is very limited. It’s an extra weight removing yourself from already small social circles.
I don’t think this justifies killing animals for consumption, but it’s a different narrative from somebody with a reasonable salary in a populated city.
Food is also engrained in culture. Eating together is a family experience for many. Opting out of a meal or eating alone adds tension to aspects of your identify you consider at your core.
Again, I don’t think this justifies carnivory, but it’s an added struggle many #vegans won’t ever experience, particularly in America.
I guess what I’m saying is be sound in your advocacy, but search for empathy with your audience. Learn what’s holding them back. Be firm in your position, but be positive. Culture changes over generational timescales, not over business cycles.
This does not mean avoid graphic content or unpleasant conversations. You can talk about these things w/ the proper nuance. Remember your journey. Ask questions, give your audience a chance to think for themselves. People are smart. Let them have space to do their own reasoning.
It takes time and the right mindset to make sustainable lifestyle habit changes.
