In an essay I wrote, "only unaware practitioners use made-up #personas in their design work".

I think I know why this is done.

🧵 1/15 Image
There is a difference between #characters and #archetypes. You can make up characters, as long as each character is based on a researched archetype.

People who make up personas are actually making up characters, but they make these characters without any grounding. There are usually no researched archetypes.

You can do better, and have fun:

1/ In context of #globaldemographics, 4 #megatrends are often referred to: population growth, population ageing, international migration and urbanization.

Here is a thread diving into these.

(Most charts are from ‘Our World in Data’. Some from UN.)
2/ To begin, for historical context, this chart

The 20th century began with 1.65 billion people in the world. It closed with 6 billion people.

This growth saw its ripple effects across the world – from economic growth to environmental impact of the century. Image

🇺🇸🇪🇺⚡️Western elites deliberately cause the Western demographic disaster, then rely on mass immigration to “solve” the issue rather than implementing a program to stimulate birth rates.

For instance, scientists in the United States are making progress in the development of a non-hormonal contraceptive pill for men, according to research published in the journal Nature Communications.
The pill, which inhibits a cellular signalling protein called soluble adenylyl cyclase (SAC) that prevents sperm from swimming, was found to paralyse mouse sperm for at least three hours, preventing it from reaching an egg.

Meanwhile in the USA: Seniors occupy twice as many homes as young adults! The latter number has remained flat for 40 years!! 😱

#economy #housing
And Americans aren’t having children either. Single households outnumber families with children — a first in U.S. history.

Americans think that they can solve all problems with immigration, but this creates a lot of social problems.

Right-wing white people are very unhappy and scared about all the non-whites.

And non-whites can be racist as well.

American “melting pot” is a myth.

This is a brain dump of .@RaoulGMI's 30+ years of knowledge, how the world works, and how his macro framework fits into it all ⤵️
1/ There's no denying that we're in a mess!

By the Law of Unintended Consequences, every time we try to fix A, we create problems B, C, D, E, etc.

We hardly understand these new problems unless there's hindsight to connect the dots...

So, how the hell did we get here?

Let's start by looking at the peak of the #British Empire:

It was the world's largest realm. But as with every empire, trying to control so many people across the globe has its price & #debt weakened its structure...

1- #demographics #inflation Two dynamics have tightened the US labor market much more than expected

First, mass Boomer retirement. They left during Covid and are not returning (see gap vs 25-54 below)

👇🏾The man who said Millenials don't buy homes is part of the anti central bank trolling crew that has been terrible for 11 years. He will never, ever forecast sales
Not demographics at all 😇🤟🏽😉
Economics is demographics and productivity; the rest is stamp collecting! However, demographics and mortgage rates are prime for housing. 2020-2024 will be different for many years because of #Demographics.
People buy homes, not an MBS. 😉

What is coming between now and 2035? Climate change: increasingly random and extreme weather, flooding, drought, famine, mass migration, pandemics, social upheaval, institutional collapse, automation, economic collapse, tribalism, authoritarianism, war, and general chaos.
Global warming will continue. Human population continues to increase. War drives a need for "energy independence". Entangled corporations, states, and individuals with direct economic interest in extraction and consumption of fossil fuels will continue to fight for their use.
And there are already feedback loops in play: the warming oceans, the melting ice caps, the thawing permafrost which is releasing trapped methane and CO2, the deforestation both man made and from increased forest fires.

Since 2013, the total fertility rate (TFR) is decreasing in Azerbaijan.

The decline in the TFR goes is primarily due to the continued trend of decline in higher-order births and the transition from a model of large families to a family with fewer children. #demographics
If current trends will continue, Azerbaijan would face insufficient number of fertile-age women able to maintain stable birth rate and this would have a negative impact on the sustainability of the country’s demographic development.
Given that the average age of marriage is 28 years for men and 24 years for women, Azerbaijan may face a shortage of brides in the near future.

At the moment, with young-age mortality decreasing, the gender imbalance between men and women persists for longer periods.

“US-#China Competition Enters the Decade of Max Danger: #Policy Ideas to Avoid Losing the 2020s”

My latest with Gabe Collins @BakerInstitute!

As #PRC/#CCP power peaks over this decade, #Xi may seek #Taiwan as historic prize.

To protect their security & rules-based order, US/Allies must mobilize immediately to deter aggression.

The mission is vital, the stakes are high, & the clock is ticking. Image
US/Allies/#Taiwan now face “#DecadeOfDanger” w/ peaking #Xi/#CCP/#PRC as #China has extreme version of “S-Curved #slowdown.”

Xi’s risk acceptance will likely be amplified by his track record of largely-uncountered revisionist actions vs. neighbors & RBO.…

A #China-centric #demographics chain:

Demographics are about the balance between young and old. Young folks do the work and raise the kids. They are the consumers.

China had scads in that group in the 2000s. When Americans look at this they see waves of cheap workers stealing global jobs. When the politburo looks they see waves of consumption overturning global norms. Both were right. Were. Past tense.

20 years later not only is everyone 20 years older, but the Chinese had very few kids during the intervening 20 years. China's labor costs are now skyrocketing, and in productivity-adjusted terms are well below American workers. & the Mao generation is moving into retirement.
